Candida – Die stille Belastung durch Hefepilze im Körper

Candida – when yeast quietly takes over the body

Candida albicans is an opportunistic yeast that naturally forms part of the human microbiota. In a healthy gut environment, it usually remains harmless, but when the microbial balance is disturbed, it can overgrow and cause a wide range of symptoms. This condition, known as intestinal candidiasis, often goes unnoticed for a long time.

Symptomes

The most common symptoms include gastrointestinal issues such as bloating, a feeling of fullness, constipation, or loose stools. Many people report intense cravings for sugar and carbohydrates, which serve as a primary food source for yeast. Systemic symptoms may also occur, including fatigue, brain fog, difficulty concentrating, headaches, and irritability. Chronic skin or mucosal problems are possible as well, such as recurring vaginal yeast infections, oral thrush (a white coating on the tongue), skin rashes, or nail fungus.

Cause

Excessive Candida growth is often promoted by an imbalance in the gut microbiome, known as dysbiosis. Common triggers include antibiotic treatments, a high-sugar diet, chronic stress, hormonal fluctuations (for example, from birth control pills), diabetes mellitus, immune suppression, and a leaky gut. Chronic illnesses and reduced gastrointestinal motility can also disrupt the microbial balance and create favorable conditions for Candida overgrowth.

Diagnosis

A Candida overgrowth can be identified through a microbiological stool analysis. In addition, serological tests that measure Candida-specific antibodies in the blood are available. In some cases, a urine test (for example, measuring arabinose) or a swab from the oral or vaginal area may also be useful. A thorough medical history covering diet, symptoms, and pre-existing conditions is essential for accurate diagnosis.

Therapy

The first and most important step in treating Candida overgrowth is diet. A three-month low sugar, anti inflammatory eating plan that avoids simple carbohydrates, alcohol, and processed foods deprives the yeast of its main food source, sugar.

In addition to dietary changes, certain herbal compounds have shown promising results in the natural treatment of fungal overgrowth. Substances such as carvacrol from oregano, allicin from garlic, thymol from thyme, and berberine from goldenseal have demonstrated strong antifungal effects in studies, including those published in the Journal of Medical Microbiology. They act by damaging the cell structures of Candida albicans or by preventing biofilm formation. Caprylic acid from coconut oil and pau d’arco bark also have antimicrobial properties, while being gentler on the microbiome than conventional antifungal medications.

When combined with targeted probiotics, for example Saccharomyces boulardii or various Lactobacillus strains, the intestinal lining can be supported and strengthened in a lasting way.
